🎨 How to color it

Color the father’s robe warm cream, the son’s torn tunic dusty tan, the farmhouse roof red-brown, and the vineyard grapes deep purple. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof tiles, stone blocks, fence rails, and grape clusters, then switch to broader strokes for the robes and road. Try making the road fade from pale beige near the house to soft gray at the bottom, as if the long walk is finally ending.

Before sunrise, a thin clink rolled under the farmhouse door. Neri dropped to his knees, sure his father’s old signet ring had bounced beneath the threshold. He wanted it back before anyone noticed the empty cord on his belt. The floor smelled of dust and yesterday’s bread, but his fingers found only splinters.

So Neri stepped outside, past the grapevines with their cool leaves, past the sheep cropping grass with soft rip-rip sounds, and down the road where white stones stung his bare heels. At the far fence, he paid his small price: he traded his last fig to a shepherd who had seen “something round” near the gate. But the round thing was only a snail shell, silver with dew.

Neri turned home slowly. By the open door, his father was waiting, holding the missing ring. “It was under the threshold,” he said. “Where nobody looked because everyone stepped over it.” Neri’s dusty knees bent before his father could finish, and the robe around him smelled like cedar and field wind. If you follow the road back to the doorway, can you keep the secret of the ring’s small clink?
