Under the cricket-click stars, Neri pinched a tiny oil bead in his fist and crept between the sleeping tents. It looked like a drop of honey trapped in clay, but it was the last gift from his mother before the long road. He wanted to tuck it beside his uncle Jacob’s hand, because Jacob had chosen the hardest stone for a pillow and had not asked anyone for comfort.
The wind smelled of dust and crushed sage. Neri found the stone, cool and pale under Jacob’s cheek, and heard him breathe like someone walking far away. Then the night loosened. A stairway rose where no carpenter had worked, and bright messengers moved up and down it, robes whispering like wings through water. Neri could have shouted. Instead he pressed the bead into a crack in the pillow-stone. “For the dark part,” he whispered.
No one saw the little bead melt. Its oil slid into the stone, and the stair steps caught the shine, one by one, clear up into the clouds. That is why, ever since, holy steps in dreams glow from underneath—because one child spent his last small light where nobody was watching. If you find the bright place above Jacob’s stone, keep Neri’s secret kindly.
