🎨 How to color it

Color the tall haunted house dusty violet, its shingled roofs charcoal gray, the crescent moon pale butter yellow, and the twisted trees silvery brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof tiles, fence boards, and skinny branches, then switch to broader strokes along the winding path and hillside. Try making the sky fade from deep blue at the top to soft lavender near the roof peaks so the bats look like they are crossing moonlight.

At the broken fence, Hazel tucked one cold hand into her coat pocket and set herself a small challenge: walk to the tall house before the moon slid behind the cloud. No running, no turning back, no calling for the owl-keeper waiting below. The gate gave a soft clack-clack in the wind, and the dry grass brushed her ankles like little brooms.

The path should have gone straight up the ridge. Instead, it curled left around a stone, then right past a bare tree, then left again where three bats clicked overhead. Hazel’s knees wobbled at the steepest part. “Just one more bend,” she whispered, and the dirt under her shoes felt cool and powdery, not sharp at all. Each curve let her stop, breathe, and see one friendly thing: a window, a porch rail, a chimney leaning like a listening ear.

When Hazel reached the door, the house sighed warm wood-smell through its cracks. She tapped once, very softly, and the whole path settled into its curvy shape behind her. Ever since, haunted-house paths never climb straight; they wind so first-time courage can arrive one bend at a time. If you trace this one from the broken gate, can you find Hazel’s breathing places in the moonlit grass?
