At the fog dock, Bram set himself a challenge: touch the old anchor bell before the tide turned. The bell hung above thick rope that smelled of salt and tar. Waves hissed shhh, shhh against the posts, and the ship wheel creaked though no hand held it. Bram’s boots stuck to wet boards. “Just one tap,” he whispered.
When his finger touched the bell, it did not ring. A tiny gold star blinked awake on the anchor instead. Then another star shone near the bottom, warm as a lantern. The fog pulled back, showing the boats their way home. Ever since, harbor anchors have carried stars, one high and one low, so brave little sailors can find the dock.
