🎨 How to color it

Color the large feather in layered teal and peacock blue, make the tiny birds soft white with golden beaks, and add lavender to the dotted flight trails and curls. Use sharp colored pencils for the feather’s narrow vein lines, working from the center stem outward so the fine sections stay clean. For a tattoo-flash twist, shade the feather from deep blue at the quill to bright aqua at the tip while keeping the birds light and airy.

The story behind this coloring page

Junia’s Feather Owes Favors — At the top of Chimney Row, Junia tapped a long feather against her boot: tick, tick, tick. Read the full story →

At the top of Chimney Row, Junia tapped a long feather against her boot: tick, tick, tick. She wanted every rooftop in the district to wake up with one tiny surprise, but she did not want one thank-you, not even a whispered one. The feather smelled faintly of rain and toast crumbs, and Junia used its soft edge to brush soot from the baker’s skylight, flick a stuck kite string loose, and tickle the mayor’s weather vane until it pointed the right way and sneezed, “North-ish!”

As dawn turned the chimney smoke silver, the feather began to shiver. Junia giggled because this always meant it was remembering. Each little line along its middle was not a line at all, but a favor she had forgotten she gave: a breeze for a hot attic, a dry gust for wet socks, a puff that cooled soup before a baby could shout. Then the barbs opened like doors, and small birds lifted out, carrying those favors back into the morning. Next time you spot the dotted trails and curling gusts around them, see if you can guess which one once rescued somebody’s socks with a tick, tick, tick.
