Under the blue lamps of the night bazaar, Liora carried an unsigned banner through aisles that smelled of clove smoke, rain-wet canvas, and fresh ink. She had promised to wait for the right words before filling it, though drums snapped from every corner and vendors called out bright slogans by the dozen. The banner curled in her hands as if it wanted to run ahead.
Past the compass-maker’s stall, a rose vendor with tattooed wrists offered her no paint, only a cup of mint tea and a place to sit. Liora watched petals open by degrees, each one slower than the last, while the market rushed around them in bells, boots, and laughter. Then a green beetle stepped from the rose’s center, trailing pollen across the blank cloth in shining loops.
By dawn, the marks had dried into no alphabet Liora knew, yet everyone who passed smiled and walked a little farther than planned. She tied the banner beneath the rose and joined the road out of the bazaar, patient at last with the curling banner in her hands.
