Every day, Edris crossed the prism canyon before sunrise, quartz splinter tucked under one claw, counting the cold clicks of crystal underfoot. The shard looked like broken stone, but it held the last note his sister had tapped before leaving for the far flats. He never lifted it toward the high triangle of sun; some doors, he thought, were better left sleeping.
Until one day the shard answered the canyon with a thin, silver hum. Because of that, every crystal needle around him rang back, bright as water in a cup. Because of that, the path he knew split into blue fire and shadow, and the only quiet place stood beneath the sun-ring itself. Edris placed the little shard there with one trembling toe. The hum opened into his sister’s three-note call, not behind him, but ahead. He stepped forward, carrying the cold clicks of crystal underfoot.
