🎨 How to color it

Color the chicken golden yellow with a red comb, make the traffic cone bright orange with white bands, and use cool grays for the blocky city buildings. The big geometric body sections are perfect for chunky crayons or markers, and it is fine if little hands color past a few sharp corners. Try making each crosswalk stripe a very pale blue-gray so the chicken’s warm colors pop as it steps across.

Between the tall blocky buildings, a little white chalk nub tapped in Kiko’s beak: tik, tik, tik. She wanted to reach the seed cart across the road before the warm sesame smell rolled away, but the city wheels hissed and whooshed like giant geese. Her chalk nub was from her first eggshell, so she held it tight.

Psst, here is the secret: Kiko did not feel big. She took one tiny step and drew one white bar. Then another. “Cluck for me,” she whispered to the traffic cone. The cone stood bright and still. Cars slowed. Feet waited. Kiko crossed on her own brave bars, tik, tik, tik.

Ever since, city streets keep white stripes for small brave feet. Next time you spot those bars under Kiko, you know who began the secret path.
