Beside the tall grain silo, Luma set herself a small challenge: she would sit still until the sun made one golden stripe across the round wall. The morning smelled like dry hay and warm wood. A fence creaked, a leaf turned over, and the straw under her feathers made tiny shhh-shhh sounds. Luma did not scratch, did not peck, did not even fuss with the crooked piece of straw near her toe.
At last, the stripe slid down the silo like honey. “There you are,” Luma whispered. Then a softer sound answered from beneath her: tik... tik... tik. Not a clock. Not a beetle. The little egg was tapping along with the sun. Luma tucked her wings closer, and the whole yard seemed to listen. If you peek at her nest, can you find the patient egg keeping Luma’s golden minute?
