🎨 How to color it

Layer the rooster’s comb in deep crimson, his beak in golden ochre, the mandala halo in turquoise and saffron, and the curling tail feathers in teal, copper, and plum. Use sharp colored pencils and work feather by feather, because the chest, wing, and tail are packed with narrow teardrops, spirals, and tiny scallops. For a striking twist, keep the pale background vines in soft gray-lavender so the richly colored rooster seems to step forward from the pattern.

Before dawn had a name, Vesper searched the moonlit aviary for the first spark of morning, tapping his claws along cold tiles that smelled of dust, fennel seed, and old rain. He had checked the brass perches, the water bowls, even the sleeping peacocks’ jeweled shadows. Nothing. Then a moth, silver as a dropped eyelash, landed on his comb and whispered, “Not under. In.”

You know the sort of secret that makes the air lean closer? Vesper stood still. Beneath the lacework of his comb, in a chamber no beak had thought to knock upon, something ticked like a warm seed. He shook his head once, and the hidden sun-kernel broke open, sending a red-gold heat through every scallop and point. The aviary windows blushed. The pigeons muttered. Far beyond the glass, the horizon answered.

Ever since, roosters carry that little buried sunrise above their eyes, and when curiosity runs away with them before daybreak, they lift their bright combs to let the morning out.
