Every evening, Nella polished the low ornaments in Evergreen Hall and whispered, “Tomorrow, I’ll reach the top.” The tree smelled sharp and sweet, and the high star waited above her like a tiny sunrise. She set herself one small challenge: climb three ladder steps and touch it.
Until one evening, the step went creak. Because of that, Nella froze with one hand on the cool tree branch. Because of THAT, the round blue ornament below her swung tap-tap-tap, as if counting. “Just one more,” she breathed.
Finally, Nella lifted the star onto the very tip. Warm gold light spilled over her cheeks and the pine needles. Next time you see her on the ladder, can you spot the ornament that counted tap-tap-tap while Nella reached the top?
