Above the wrapping room, a little train sat on a high shelf and made only a soft puff-puff. Tavi needed one small whistle for it before the midnight bell. “I know a secret place,” he whispered, and climbed to the ornament loft, where pine needles tickled his sleeves and glass balls clicked like tiny teeth.
He searched behind stars, under holly, and beside a swinging striped ornament. Nothing. His fingers got sticky with sap, and one boot filled with cold tinsel, but he waited while a round red berry rolled off a branch and bumped a plain B block.
Tap-tap. The block sounded hollow. Tavi carried it back, opened its loose wooden side, and found a silver whistle tucked inside with a note: For the elf who listens longest. Next time you see the B block by the train, keep the secret of the soft puff-puff.
