🎨 How to color it

Color the elf’s hat cranberry red, the mail sack warm tan, the North Pole mailbox icy blue, and the snowy firs deep pine green. Use sharp colored pencils for the small envelope corners, snowflake arms, and the letters on the mailbox, then switch to broader strokes for the rolling hills. Add a pale lavender shadow under the elf’s boots and mailbox post so the snow looks soft and moonlit.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Mailboxes Face North — Under a hush of falling flakes, Orlo counted envelopes by touch in his canvas sack, saving one tiny silver stamp in his mitten. Read the full story →

Under a hush of falling flakes, Orlo counted envelopes by touch in his canvas sack, saving one tiny silver stamp in his mitten. It had belonged to his mother, who said it was for a letter that needed help finding its way. That night, the polar wind kept turning every mailbox door east, then west, then anywhere but right, and the children’s wishes whispered inside like dry leaves.

Orlo did not call for cheers or a lantern parade. He pressed the silver stamp beneath the handle of the loneliest mailbox and said, “Find the waiting letters.” The metal grew warm as bread, clicked once, and turned its door toward the star that never wandered. One by one, every mailbox along the snowy road quietly copied it.

By morning, no one saw the small mitten print on the post, only full sacks moving smoothly through blue snow. Ever since, North Pole mailboxes face north, and if you spot the envelope in Orlo’s hand, maybe it is still carrying the hush of falling flakes.
