Every evening, Kessel slid gingerbread people across the floury counter in neat rows, listening for the oven’s soft whoomph and the spoon’s clink in the batter bowl. He wanted the bakery crew to try his new game, Cookie Dash, where each tray had to travel from mixer to oven before the cinnamon timer stopped hissing. “Fast feet, careful hands!” he called, grinning under his striped cap.
Until one day, the oven door stuck halfway, and the first tray wobbled like a sled on ice. Because of that, Kessel had to balance four warm, spicy cookies while nudging the latch with his elbow. Because of THAT, the shelf garlands jingled, the flour sprites woke up, and everyone heard the timer spit its last sandy tick.
Kessel took one quick breath of sugar and smoke, then changed the rule: no one won unless everyone found a place in the dash. Sprites tugged the garland clear, jar-stackers passed mitts, and Kessel slid the tray home just as the oven boomed open. Next time you spot those four gingerbread runners, listen for their tiny cheer: fast feet, careful hands.
