In the crystal annex, where winter light broke into green, red, and blue on the floor, Sarell lifted one foot over the cold tiles and let the bells at his waist give a single careful chime. He had come to try the First Step alone, before the solstice guests arrived, when no one could hear a missed beat. The air smelled faintly of pine resin and metal polish. His palms warmed inside his mittens as he raised them, not high, just high enough.
The prisms answered with narrow flashes across the walls. Sarell turned slowly, counting the soft clink of each bell, and the silence seemed to make room for him. Then a snowflake drifted through the open vent, caught on the edge of a hanging crystal, and did not melt. It threw back a tiny version of him—tilted hat, bright cheeks, lifted hands—moving a breath later than he moved.
He laughed once, very quietly. “You first?” he whispered, and the reflected elf raised its mitten as if inviting him onward. Sarell stepped into the next chime, not because the room was empty, but because it had answered gently; in that shared glitter, the First Step became a conversation with falling light.
