Every night, Pip topped up the toy bench before the bell rang: wheels in the blue bin, bears by the blocks, ribbons in curly piles. The workshop smelled like cedar shavings and peppermint wax, and the tools on the wall went clink-clink when he bumped the table with his hip. Pip liked leaving one extra toy in the sack for a child whose list had arrived smudged or late.
Until one night, the glue pot sneezed. “Achoo-glop!” Out popped a tiny folded note, sticky as a pancake. Because of that, Pip read, Please give my spare bear to someone with cold toes. Because of THAT, he found a shivering mouse family nesting behind the train tracks, using ribbon scraps for blankets.
Finally, Pip tucked the smallest teddy and three square presents into the big sack, then slid them under the workbench where no supervisor’s checklist would count them. If you spot the bulging sack later, keep Pip’s secret: generosity can smell like cedar shavings and peppermint wax.
