Under the pine boughs, Pip set a wrapped box in the snow and invented a game called Wait-for-the-Bell. He would wave once, then listen. The cold air smelled like needles and berries, and the ribbon made a soft papery hush when the wind touched it.
No bell rang. Pip counted snowflake points, boot squeaks, and the tiny thump of his mitten on his sleeve. “I can wait,” he whispered. Above him, the stars held very still.
Then one star winked, and another answered. The bell was not in the box at all. It was the sky, ringing with little flashes. Pip waved again, slowly this time, and if you find his mitten, you may catch the next quiet ring under the pine boughs.
