Every day after breakfast, Fritz marched to the cattail pond, tapped the dock twice, and cast his bobber with a plip. He wanted the biggest splash in the whole pond, bigger than frog flops or duck sneezes. The fish, however, were excellent wiggle artists. They nibbled his bait, flicked their tails, and left him holding a line that smelled like pondweed and jokes.
Until one day, his bobber bonked a lily stem and went ding. Fritz froze. Because of that tiny bell sound, two minnows popped up to stare. Because of that, a fat sunfish leaped, splashed Fritz’s toes, and shouted, “Again!” Fritz shook the bobber. Ding-ding! From under the dock came six fish, one turtle, and a bubble that sounded suspiciously like a giggle.
Finally, Fritz stopped trying to catch the biggest splash and started conducting them. Every ding brought a plop, a flip, or a tail-slap, and the dock felt less like a fishing spot than the seat saved just for him. If you find the bobber between the leaping fish, you might hear Fritz’s breakfast plip turn into a pond full of ding-ding.
