🎨 How to color it

Color the cat honey orange, the paw-print backpack teal, the apple ruby red, and the chalkboard a deep classroom green. Use sharp colored pencils for the backpack straps, whiskers, desk legs, and plant leaves, then switch to broader strokes for the chalkboard and tabletops. Try making the apple extra glossy with a small white highlight and a golden shadow on the desk under the cat’s paws.

The first bell had not rung, but the classroom already smelled like chalk dust, pencil shavings, and one crisp apple on the front desk. Nellie padded in with her paw-print backpack bumping her sides, carrying a dented brass apple bell wrapped in her lunch napkin. She wanted one tiny chime before everyone arrived, the same chime her old crossing guard used to make on windy mornings.

She hopped onto the teacher’s desk, set the bell beside the real apple, and tapped it with one claw. Ting! The chalkboard trembled. Ting-ting! The desk lids clicked open, and paper clips began lining up like silver ants. “Whoa,” Nellie whispered, whiskers buzzing.

Then the bell answered in a voice no louder than a seed: “Not an alarm. A launch count.” From every desk, folded homework sheets popped into little paper rockets, each one scribbled with a classmate’s name. Nellie laughed so hard her backpack wiggled. Her private chime had been saving up the whole room’s morning joy.

When the children rushed in, rockets waited on every chair, ready for recess wind. If you spot Nellie beside the apple, can you hear the ting that began before the first bell?
