🎨 How to color it

Layer smoky gray over the large paw pad, dusty rose inside the four toe beans, teal along the petal bands, and soft gold on the outer scalloped border. Use sharp colored pencils and color from the center of each tiny teardrop, curl, and dot outward so the black linework stays crisp. For a mischievous twist, hide one bright coral “catnip spark” in a single swirl where only a patient viewer will find it.

At midnight in the letterpress shop, Vesper padded across the cooling stone floor with one secret purpose: leave a thank-you for Lottie, who always warmed the composing room before dawn. The air smelled of metal type, linseed oil, and the faint peppery dust of old paper. He stepped into a saucer of leftover ink, lifted one paw, and considered the clean sheet waiting on the press bed. A plain print seemed too small for a kindness nobody would see being made.

So he began to turn his paw before pressing it down, whiskers twitching at the soft squish. The pad became a garden of smudges, the toes four little moons. From beneath a drawer of ampersands came a beetle no bigger than a comma, dragging a silver thread and wearing ink on all six feet. Without asking permission, it marched through the wet mark in loops, dots, and ridiculous flourishes, as if signing a treaty with great importance.

By dawn, the sheet held one grand pawprint, half cat, half beetle, entirely too fancy for a simple thank-you. Vesper left it beside Lottie’s mug and washed his paws in the paper tray with disgraceful satisfaction. When she laughed, the press rollers clicked like tiny applause, and the cooling stone floor remembered every secret step.
