🎨 How to color it

Layer warm sand and tawny brown over the kitten’s body, color the fishbone markings in sea-glass blue, and give the paw-print band a soft coral accent. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny ribs, eye curves, and narrow ear stripes, then blend lightly on the larger forehead and leg panels. Try making the circular frame a deep indigo so the warm kitten and cool fish motifs feel like a small night tide chart.

Every evening, Sable sat in the tide-chart room while the old floorboards smelled of salt and dust, and she followed the fishbone marks painted across her paws as if they were a map. She wanted to know why the smallest bones always pointed toward the blank round window. Until one evening, the smallest fish shape on her chest blinked.

Because of that, Sable held still while its silver eye opened and shut, and the room seemed to breathe with a sound like shells turning over. Because of that, every fishbone mark on her fur tugged gently toward the window, lining her up with a moon she had never noticed was rising from below the sea, not above it. At last she touched her nose to the glass, and the moon answered by drawing one new bright bone across her brow, pointing home to the question that had started it all.
