🎨 How to color it

Layer warm apricot and cream through the puppy’s patterned fur, color the jeweled collar in teal and amber, and give the flowered headpiece deep rose petals with a pearl center. Use sharp pencils for the tiny spirals, beads, and petal veins, working from the puppy’s face outward so your hand does not smudge the densest details. For a mischievous twist, make the two floppy ears different but related—one with coral curls and the other with turquoise paisleys.

Under the glass roof of the pattern conservatory, Quibble sat on the cool mosaic floor with a velvet key tag tucked against his collar. He had polished it with his tongue until it tasted faintly of brass and biscuits, because the midnight map club met only when the fountain sounded like quiet applause. Around him, ink vines curled across tables, beetle-backed magnifiers clicked open, and every chair seemed already to know his size.

The club unfolded no maps of roads. They traced whorls in fern shadows, loops in snail trails, and the fancy commas left by moth wings in dust. Quibble lowered his chin solemnly, then sneezed into the ink tray. “Excellent punctuation,” said a tortoise in spectacles, and nobody moved away.

Then the chairwoman lifted Quibble’s velvet key tag and pressed it into a square of soft gold ink. It was not a key at all. It was the club’s oldest stamp: a puppy nose surrounded by curls, petals, and ridiculous little beads. Every map in the conservatory had been waiting for that exact smudge. Quibble wagged once, very carefully, while the fountain applauded; the velvet key tag rested against his collar, tasting of brass and biscuits.
