🎨 How to color it

Layer olive green and deep teal through the leafy crown, give the small birds russet and golden yellow accents, and keep the rolling hills a misty sage. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny feather, paisley, and bark patterns, turning the page as you follow each branch from trunk to leaf tip. For a playful finish, hide one unexpected coral bird among the calmer greens and let the roots fade from warm umber into violet shadows.

Every evening, Quin swept curls of bark from the hilltree’s roots and polished a flat copper button he kept in his vest, though it had not fastened anything in years. He called it his rent money, which made the robins laugh like teaspoons in a drawer. Then one windy dusk the birds arrived with twigs, IOUs, and outrageous opinions, claiming every branch for a festival of nests.

Because of that, the tree groaned under feathered committees; because of that, the flowers below lost their sun, and the beetles began charging tolls through the grass. Quin climbed up smelling leaf-sap and dust, placed the button in a hollow, and whispered, “For whoever is shortest on shine.” By morning, no bird mentioned it. They had hammered the button into a tiny copper moon above the poorest nest, and somehow every branch made room.
