🎨 How to color it

Layer deep emerald on the rose leaves, dusty pink on the climbing roses, warm ivory on the stone columns, and pale lavender across the distant castle walls. Use sharp pencils for the tight vine curls, window tracery, and tiny castle towers, then switch to lighter pressure for the open hills and sky. Try a sunrise gradient through the three arched openings so the knight’s road feels bright against the cooler stone frame.

Before the bell warmed its first note, Marcellus tapped his reins and set himself a private challenge: count every open arch between the lower fields and the high castle before noon. The morning smelled of damp stone and crushed clover as his horse, Vesper, stepped briskly along the ribbon road. One arch in the bridge, three in the mill wall, two more cut through the old aqueduct—Marcellus called the numbers under his breath like a drumbeat.

The road climbed. Wind rattled lance flags on the far towers, and the valley flashed silver where streams bent through the grass. Marcellus reached the rose-window gallery, breath quick, boots dusty, certain he had found the finest arch of all: three tall openings filled with sky, hill, and home. Then the roses answered. Each vine curved into a hidden arch, each thorny loop held another small doorway of air, and his careful count burst open into more than numbers.

He laughed, not at being wrong, but at belonging to a place that kept adding entrances. Vesper snorted into the sweet rose smell, the castle bells rang bright above them, and Marcellus began again before the bell warmed its first note.
