🎨 How to color it

Give the roadster a deep emerald body, the sunburst rays a burnished gold, the grille a cool chrome silver, and the column frames a smoky charcoal. Use sharp colored pencils for the chevrons, tire treads, hood vents, and narrow rays, working from the center outward so the symmetry stays crisp. For extra drama, blend the gold rays into amber near the car roof while keeping the headlights pale ivory against the darker fenders.

Every morning, Sylvan rolled the same polished loop through Meridian Terminal, past bronze columns and sleepy ticket clocks, tracing the floor’s black-and-cream arrows before the first train hissed awake. Until one day, a woman in a silver motoring veil stepped from a sealed platform and tapped his hood ornament with a gloved finger. “Follow the ray that has no shadow.” Her perfume smelled of rain on hot metal.

Because of that, Sylvan nosed toward the rising sunburst above the locked east gate, and one golden stripe slid open with a click like a camera shutter. Because of that, the floor arrows began moving under his tires, carrying him between walls of light, past echoing horns, paper maps, and a wind that tasted faintly of electricity. At the center waited another roadster, chrome bright and perfectly silent, facing him from inside a mirror.

Sylvan flashed his ivory headlights. The stranger flashed back one beat later, then two, then none at all, and the mirror became a tunnel. At last Sylvan drove through, laughing in the roar of his own engine, and burst onto a boulevard that had not existed yesterday. Behind him, Meridian Terminal woke to ticking clocks, bronze columns, and the same polished loop—except one black-and-cream arrow now pointed toward a ray with no shadow.
