Under the wide station canopy, Penny practiced her new horn tune in tiny beeps: peep, peep, pa-PEEP. She wanted every car at the corner gas station to hear it, but the morning was full of soft tire hiss, coffee smells, and sleepy windshield wipers. She rolled beside pump four and wiggled with the kind of happiness that made her hubcaps feel fizzy.
The hose swung over with a rubbery squeak. Penny held very still while the nozzle clicked, clicked, clicked. On the pump screen, the numbers blinked like little square eyes. “Wait till the delivery van hears my ending,” Penny whispered, saving her biggest beep for last.
Then the nozzle gave a sneezy toot.
Penny froze. The sound had not come from her horn at all. Hidden inside the nozzle handle was a tiny party whistle, curled like a silver fern and striped with old confetti. The next click made it chirp; the next made it warble. Soon Penny beeped her tune, the nozzle tootled harmony, and even the price screen flashed in rhythm. Joy that big could not stay parked, so Penny honked for the scooters, taxis, and buses to join in—next time you see the long hose at pump four, can you spot where the surprise whistle might be curled?
