🎨 How to color it

Layer Santa’s hat in cranberry red and deep burgundy, make the holly leaves forest green with ruby berries, and give the snowflakes a pale icy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny paisleys, curls, and petal shapes, working from the thick outline inward so the patterns stay crisp. Try a warm ivory beard with faint gold shadows against a cool midnight-blue outer background to make the mandala details glow.

In the ice atrium after midnight, when the ceiling breathed blue light and peppermint wax cooled in the lamps, Yarrow set himself a private test: find the smallest perfect circle in the North Pole before the last chime. His own alcove held plenty of safe loops—buttonholes, bell mouths, the curl of ribbon on his desk—but those felt too familiar. So he slipped past the frost glass doors with one black pencil tucked behind his ear, trading warmth for the dry bite of cold on his cheeks.

He found circles everywhere, of course: berry skins glazed with frost, star holes punched in tin garlands, the round hush inside a snowflake. Each one cost him something small—a smudged cuff, numb fingers, the pencil rolling once beneath a holly bench. At the far end, Santa was waiting without ceremony, his hat patterned with all the wandering lines Yarrow had followed. “There you are,” Santa said, as if the atrium had been saving his place.

Yarrow drew one final circle around a fallen drop of candlelight, no bigger than a pea, and understood the secret: he had not stepped out to find a shape, but the path back into one. The ceiling breathed blue light, and the smallest perfect circle was home.
