🎨 How to color it

Layer marigold orange into the large forehead flower, turquoise around the floral eye circles, rose pink in the paisley cheek ovals, and deep violet along the heart-shaped nose. Use sharp colored pencils for the nested petals, dots, and scalloped tooth border, turning the page as you work so each matching curve stays even. For a polished mandala effect, repeat one accent color in the sunburst spikes, lower chin curls, and tiny forehead dots.

At the canal bridge, Lucía carried a blank wooden skull under her shawl, meaning to borrow an awl fine enough for the smallest petals. Her own blade left clumsy ridges, and the altar at home waited with beeswax candles and the dry, peppery smell of marigolds. A shell vendor beneath the arches heard the wood knock against her basket and offered a needle-thin tool with a handle worn smooth as river stone. In exchange, Lucía gave up the last blue ribbon meant for the skull’s brow.

She worked beside the water until the lamps came on, cutting circles, leaves, and curling vines by feel. The shell vendor hummed, and each note seemed to settle her hand. When Lucía returned, the skull held no ribbon, but every groove caught candlelight as if she had planted a small garden there herself. The altar waited, and so did the pride, warm and handmade, under her shawl.
