🎨 How to color it

Try a burnished gold for the cat’s collar and chest panels, deep lapis blue for the sunburst rays, terracotta for the pyramids, and Nile green for the lotus fans. Use sharp pencils and color from the center outward, because the cat’s tiny forehead triangles, necklace bands, and zigzag side panels can smudge if your hand drags across them. For a dramatic twist, shade the sunburst from pale yellow near the cat’s ears to indigo at the outer points, as if dusk is gathering behind the shrine.

At the west end of the desert temple, where stone held the day’s warmth like bread from an oven, Caldera kept one paw over a plain bronze button. It had belonged to the mason who carved her first whisker line, and every evening she pressed it to wake a small lamp above the inner door. The lamp smelled faintly of hot metal and blue smoke; its click told travelers they had reached the room meant for them.

One violet dusk, the click did not come. Wind sifted sand through the lotus screens. The pyramids outside went flat and gray. Caldera felt the lost hush of footsteps stopping in the courtyard, unsure which arch was home. She lowered her head until her forehead touched the cold button and whispered, “Stay with me.”

The bronze warmed under her paw. Not a lamp, then, but a circle of light rose behind her ears, splitting into long, clean rays that found every doorway, every stair, every waiting face. Since that night, sunbursts crown the cat shrines, so anyone arriving at dusk can stand in their gold and feel exactly where they belong.
