🎨 How to color it

Layer the kitten’s fur in smoky silver, warm cream, and soft charcoal, with moss green leaves and a weathered umber branch. Use sharp colored pencils to follow the engraved fur strokes from the outer ruff inward, keeping your pressure lighter on the cheeks and chest. Add a faint blue-gray shadow behind the leaves so the bright eyes and tall ear tufts feel quietly watchful.

At dusk, when the orchard smelled of bark dust and cooling rain, Sable climbed higher than the lantern hooks to wait for the path that only appeared after moonrise. He wanted to guide the beetle porters home before their carts of pollen soured, but every branch looked alike in the dark, and the leaves merely shivered their dry little hush.

He waited through one owl call, then two. A plain leaf above his nose turned silver at the edge, and beneath it, where nobody ever looked, fine pale lines glowed like whiskers drawn by moonmilk. Sable touched them with one claw. The lines matched the bends of the branches, the fork near the hollow, the safe crossing over the thorn gap.

The beetle wheels clicked softly after him, patient as rain in a gutter. By morning, the glow had faded, but the marks remained on the undersides of leaves for any quiet climber willing to pause. Ever since, leaves keep whisker maps, and at dusk the orchard still smells of bark dust and cooling rain.
