Every evening, Bram polished a cracked silver thimble beneath the glass reef and charged passing shrimp one bubble to admire it. The thimble had belonged to a surface sailor who once dropped crumbs of cinnamon cake overboard, and Bram swore it still smelled faintly of parties. Then one evening the clam choir opened for rehearsal and produced only a damp plop.
Because of that, the grumpy conductor blamed the current, the current blamed the moon, and Bram quietly discovered a pebble wedged in the choir’s echo shell. Because of that, he needed something small, hollow, and exactly thimble-shaped to pry it loose without cracking the shell. “Absolutely not,” he told his favorite useless treasure, while already fitting it into the gap.
The pebble popped free; the choir rang bright as spoons in a teacup. Bram slipped away before anyone could applaud, leaving the thimble hidden in the shell as a new echo chamber. Afterward, he charged the shrimp two bubbles to hear nothing about it, and the reef smelled faintly of parties.
