In a warm crack where the stone smelled faintly of salt and rain, Sana tapped three pebbles into a ring. She had invented Circle-Home: choose a stone from far away, carry it back, and make the ring sing. One pebble gave only a dull clack. Sana wanted a bell-stone from the narrow canyon, where the water hummed between tall rocks.
She slipped out, arms brushing cold ridges. Sand puffed under her, and tiny bubbles ticked past her eyes. The bell-stone shone beside a nervous crab, who clutched it like a roof in a storm. “May I borrow that sound?” Sana asked. The crab shook so hard the stone chimed. A shadow of a prowling eel slid over them. Sana wrapped her arms around the crab and stone until the shadow passed, but one pebble from her home ring rolled away into a crack.
Back in her warm place, Sana set the bell-stone down. The crab tucked beside it, safe and clicking softly. The ring sang with one new voice and one missing space, which made room just the right size for a friend. Next time you follow Sana’s curling arms, can you find the little crab who helped the circle become home?
