Under the crackle of New Year fireworks, Milo patted his round belly and whispered, “Three perfect snowflakes before the last boom.” He had carved one with a pine needle, but its arms wobbled like tired spider legs. The best stencil sticks lay beyond the straight little firs, where the snow squeaked sharp and blue underfoot.
Milo slid out of his cozy drift. Past the star lanterns, he found thin fallen twigs, smooth as pencil leads. A gust tried to snatch them, so he tied them with one fuzzy cuff from his mitten. His wrist felt nippy, but the bundle held.
Back in the grove, Milo pressed each twig into his snow, turn, press, turn, press, until three flakes bloomed clean and bold. They were not matching; one looked like a wheel, one like a secret map, one like a firework caught cold. Milo grinned. Next time the sky goes boom, see if you can spot the chilly cuff that helped him make the snowflakes by hand.
