Before the first sun ever reached the dry creek causeway, Halden rolled there in the blue hour, wanting only to cross without waking the sleeping stones. Gravel clicked under his tires like tiny teeth. Then a voice rose from the crack ahead, thin as a match flame: “Carry this, or morning stays lost.”
A small dawn-keeper stood between the rocks, holding a warm half-circle of light that smelled faintly of hot metal and rain on dust. Halden’s engine gave one uncertain thump. He had never carried anything brighter than a headlamp, but he lowered his front bumper until the glow touched his grille. Lines of gold ran outward, finding every rib and angle, locking into a fan.
The creek bed brightened. The stones kept their sleep. And ever since, monster trucks wear sunrise grilles, remembering the first quiet crossing.
