Every morning, before the sprinklers clicked and hissed, Brio hurried down the maple allotment rows to plant one surprise sapling for the gardeners. He packed his trowel, patted the crumbly soil, and whispered, “Grow big before lunch.” Until one day, a beetle with a red shell and a tiny paper flag burst from under a cabbage leaf, drumming its feet like rain on a roof.
Because of that, Brio followed the beetle past the bean poles and nearly tripped over a little globe marker half-buried in the dirt. Because of that, he saw the globe was not a toy at all, but a festival sign: PLANT HERE, SHARE SHADE EVERYWHERE. The beetle zipped in circles, pointing with its flag, while wind rattled the seed packets like applause.
At last, Brio set the sapling in the marked mound and called across the paths. Gardeners came running with watering cans, ribbons, and flower seeds, laughing so loudly the daisies seemed to bob along. If you spot the tiny globe near Brio’s new tree, imagine the beetle’s feet going tap-tap-tap before the sprinklers clicked and hissed.
