Under the third-base seats, Milo pressed his hand to the pocket where the lineup card should have been. Empty. Without it, Coach couldn’t set the next inning. The card had slipped through the grate by the service tunnel, where cold air smelled like wet concrete and popcorn butter. Milo hated going there alone, but the game crackled above him, cleats ticking like beetles. He grabbed a flashlight and stepped off the safe dugout mat.
A soft scrape answered him near second base. From the chalk line rose a little gray puff shaped almost like a hand. It pushed the lost card toward him, then curled around his shoes. “Slide when the dust blinks,” whispered the puff. Milo’s knees went fizzy. He paid for the card with his clean uniform, scooping it up as the puff sneezed a cloud over the basepath.
Back in play, Milo took his lead. The pitcher turned. The dust blinked—one tiny flash in the tan swirl. Milo ran, dropped, and slid, gravel hissing under his hip while the fielder’s glove snapped beside him. Safe. In his fist was the smudged lineup card, and in his chest was a new, small drumbeat.
