🎨 How to color it

Color the strawberries ruby red, the lattice strips golden tan, the scalloped pie crust buttery yellow, and the corner leaves deep garden green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny strawberry seeds and leaf veins, then switch to broader strokes for the wide woven crust bands. Try shading every other lattice strip a little darker so the over-under weave looks extra twisty.

Every night, Pip polished the cracked pie whistle that hung from his stem and listened beside the warm lattice pies. He wanted to hear the oven’s secret click, the one that meant the cooling-rack vault could open. The whistle only made a wheezy peep, so the flour moths snickered, “Pip, that thing sounds like a sleepy crumb!”

Until one night, a sugar gust slammed the bakery shutters. Because of that, the racks rolled wild across the tiles, clackety-clack. Because of that, the newest strawberry pie slid toward the moonlit floor, its crust smelling of butter and jam. Pip waited instead of blowing right away. At last the oven gave a tiny tick-tick. Pip puffed his cheeks and blew one patient peep.

The cracked whistle answered with a high silver note. The vault door sprang open, catching the runaway rack with a soft thunk. Flour moths tumbled into a sugar sack, sneezing. Pip tucked the whistle back under his leaves, and if you spot the pie’s woven crust, maybe you can guess where that patient peep hid.
