Under the tickly grass of the root patch, Oren tucked his gray pocket pebble beside a strawberry crown and whispered, “Stay put, Captain Clunk.” He wanted the new runners to curl in fancy loops before the midday dew dried. The pebble was his measuring stone, his starting bell, and, if anyone asked, definitely not a pet.
The runners slid outward, leaf by leaf. A white blossom opened like a tiny umbrella. One berry blushed, then another. Oren tapped the pebble at each loop and made a proud clink that sounded much grander than a pebble deserved.
Then the pebble sneezed.
Six little legs popped out, and a dusty beetle bowed from underneath. “Your Captain Clunk is my comedy helmet,” she said. Oren laughed so hard the grass trembled. He tapped once, the beetle bonked twice, and soon every leaf, root, flower, and berry had its own clink-clunk rhythm. If you spot the curled runner, can you keep Captain Clunk’s beat with your finger?
