Before the beach warmed, Cleo tapped one claw on the damp sand: tap, hush, tap, hush. She had invented Tide Count, a game where she stepped forward only after three waves curled back and left silver foam behind. The shell on her back felt cool and heavy, and the air smelled of salt and green palm bark.

One wave whispered close. Two waves folded away. On the third, Cleo lifted her smallest leg and placed it on a patch of sand she had never crossed before. Nothing grand happened—just a soft sink, a tiny tickle, and her own brave breath under her shell.

Then the surprise came from above. A gull’s shadow slid over the beach, and in the wet sand Cleo saw dots, curves, and little claw marks: the tide had been counting her, too. “Your turn,” she murmured, and made one more careful tap.
