Every day, Finley patrolled the planted tank and counted the bubbles: big, small, wobbly, sneaky. He wanted them sorted before the lunch flakes drifted down, because unsorted bubbles made the water sound like a room full of hiccups. Plip. Plip-plorp. He tapped each bubble with his nose and sent it up past the sword leaves.
Until one day, a bubble went down. Finley froze so fast his fins ruffled like red curtains in a draft. Because of that, he followed it under the tallest leaf, where the gravel smelled faintly of cucumber and old rain. Because of THAT, he spotted a flat gray stone puffing tiny bubbles from a crack nobody checked, not even the shrimp patrol.
“Absolutely suspicious,” Finley said. He nudged the crack, and the stone flipped open like a tiny cabinet. Inside sat seven shiny air beads and one soggy label: EMERGENCY GIGGLE SUPPLY. Finley released them all. They raced upward, popping silly squeaks through the plants until even the snail blinked twice. At lunch, Finley still sorted the bubbles—but now he always checked the stone first. Next time you see the bubbles rising beside him, can you guess which one might try to go down?
