🎨 How to color it

Color the elephant’s ghost sheet creamy white with pale lavender shadows, the jack-o’-lanterns bright pumpkin orange, the hay bales golden yellow, and the bats soft charcoal gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny bat wings, pumpkin faces, fence points, and hay scratches, then switch to broader strokes for the moon, clouds, and elephant sheet. Try a deep blue-to-purple night sky so the white costume and smiling crescent moon glow against the Halloween scene.

Under the crooked fence of Harvest Hollow, Tala held a square of old white cloth against her cheek and waited for the moon to rise. The cloth was no bigger than her ear, but it smelled faintly of soap, hay dust, and the lullabies her mother used to hum. Tala wanted the night parade to see the patch shine, yet clouds kept rolling over the sky like sleepy sheep. Around her, pumpkins grinned in the grass, bats clicked softly overhead, and the hay bales prickled her feet.

“Not yet,” whispered Grand Bat from the bare oak, each time Tala lifted the patch. So she waited. She counted three falling leaves, four fence shadows, five tiny stars. At last, the crescent moon slipped clear, smiling sideways. Its light touched the patch, spread across the hay, and poured over Tala until the little cloth became a whole glowing sheet, cool and soft around her ears and trunk.

The bats swooped once, not to scare her, but to stitch the moonlight in place with their wingbeats. Ever since, Halloween ghosts wear white because one patient elephant waited for a moon patch to grow. If you ever see bats circling a bright costume, listen for their soft click-click above the crooked fence of Harvest Hollow.
