Under the licorice-black sky, Zadie curled her tail around the pumpkin bowl and invented Candy Comet, the best game any rooftop dragon had ever made. She tapped a peppermint stick like a tiny referee wand. “Point if it lands by a star!” she announced, and flicked one wrapped taffy into the cool, windy dark.
The candy did not fall. It sailed in a loop, whoosh-swish, past two giggling bats and the crooked chimney of the candy shop below. Zadie’s hat bells jingled as she tossed gumdrops, sour ropes, and one suspiciously bouncy lollipop, each one circling back into the pumpkin with a plunk.
Then the crescent moon opened one sleepy eye. Every “star” Zadie had been aiming for was actually a crumb stuck to the moon’s cheek from its own midnight snack. The moon grinned, blew them into the sky, and kept score with silver winks.
Zadie laughed so hard her wings flapped glitter into the bowl. From then on, Candy Comet needed three players: one dragon, two bats, and a moon with excellent snack crumbs. If you ever spot a peppermint stick lifted like a referee wand, be ready—the next comet might plunk right where it belongs.
