🎨 How to color it

Give the baseball cap a deep navy, the wooden bat a honey brown, the July flags bright red, and the scoreboard a crisp grass green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny crowd, scoreboard numbers, and baseball stitches, then switch to broader strokes for the open sky and field curves. Try a pale sunset gradient behind the arcing ball so the big July 4th moment feels warm without hiding the cloud outlines.

From the shaded equipment nook, Quinn could hear the crack of bats and smell warm peanuts drifting under the seats. He wanted one game ball more than anything, not from a store shelf, but one with real scuffs and red stitches dusted in July dirt. When a foul shot popped over the railing and vanished toward the old catwalk, Quinn slipped from his comfortable bench and climbed the narrow iron stairs.

The metal steps ticked under his sneakers, and hot light striped his arms. At the top, the ball sat beside a girl with silver braids playing a tiny harmonica. “It hums if you listen,” she said. Quinn held the ball to his ear. Inside the leather was a soft buzz: crowd-roar, bat-crack, flag-snap, all tangled together. To take it back, he traded his last lemonade token for a paper cup of water for her dry throat.

Quinn returned before the next pitch with no cold drink, but with the ball tucked safe in his pocket and a new sound in his head. The stadium seemed gentler now, every cheer a note finding its place. If you spot the ball flying high over the field, listen closely—the warm peanuts and July dirt are still humming back.
