Under the warm fence light, Quincy set himself a very important challenge: nibble seven neat crumbs from the cheese and leave them in a trail to his tiny wooden house. He tapped each crumb with his paw. One, two, three—crunch, sniff, squeak! The cheese smelled salty and sunny, and Quincy’s whiskers wiggled with mischief. “Seven crumbs, no more!” he whispered, then took one extra nibble because counting made him hungry.
A beetle in a blue button hat marched out from behind the grass. Then two pill bugs rolled over like little gray marbles. Quincy blinked. His secret crumb trail had become a supper path for very small guests. He quietly pushed the biggest piece closer, pretending nobody could see his generous paws. By moonrise, everyone had a bite, and Quincy had exactly seven crumbs left on his nose. If you peek at his smile, you might guess who made the crumby surprise.
