Beside the warm team blanket, Fenn nosed the empty whistle string and gave a soft huff. Practice could not start without its tweet-tweet, and he wanted to bring it back before the kids arrived. A baseball rolled past his paws, bump-bump, smelling of dust and clover. Fenn trotted after it, away from his cozy spot, through tickly grass and around cool little stones. One burr stuck to his tail. “Ouch, little sticker,” he whispered, but he kept going.
The ball bounced beside the smallest grass patch by the quiet bench. Fenn patted the tuft, and something silver peeked out where nobody ever sniffed. The whistle! It had a clover stem curled through its loop like a bow. Fenn carried it home, burr and all, and curled beside the blanket just as the first cleats crunched near. Tweet-tweet went the coach, and Fenn’s tail answered thump-thump. Can you spot the tiny grass patch that kept his secret safe?
