🎨 How to color it

Try sea-glass turquoise for the bicycle frame, sandy beige for the beach, leaf green for the palm fronds, and sunny yellow for the smiling sun. Use sharp colored pencils on the thin wheel spokes, basket weave, palm stripes, and wave lines so the small details stay crisp. For a seaside twist, blend pale blue into the ocean and leave little white curls on the breaking waves for foam.

Every evening, when the beach smelled of salt and warm rubber, Selby rolled her blue cruiser only as far as the umbrella shadow. She had made herself a private challenge: tomorrow, one wheel-length farther than yesterday, until she could reach the last dry footprint near the waves.

Then one day, the tide rushed in early with a hush-hush roar. Because of that, her old stopping place vanished under silver water. Because of that, Selby had to choose: turn back with her heart knocking, or pedal to the next dry curve where a tiny shell flashed like a wink. “Just to the shell,” she whispered.

At last, her front tire crunched beside it, safe and steady. The sun slid through a cloud, the sailboat tipped on the horizon, and Selby tucked the shell beside her hat in the basket. Next time you see those footprints in the sand, can you tell which one was made after her heart stopped knocking?
