Before the sun touched the water, a silver dew bell chimed once from the far lily raft. Chloe tucked her empty collecting cup under her arm and set herself a challenge: bring back one clear chime before the breakfast lanterns blinked awake.
She stepped off her warm moss mat and crossed the floating garden bridges. The planks wobbled, the canal smelled of mint and wet wood, and sleepy beetles clicked under the leaves. To reach the bell, she gave her ribbon to a vine that was sagging into the water. Then the bell would not ring. Its little clapper was stuck with pollen. “Just one sound,” Chloe whispered, and brushed it free with her sleeve.
Ping! The note rolled over every raft. Daisies opened, berries shone, and hidden buds answered—ping, ting, ling—until Chloe’s cup trembled with more music than it could hold. She hurried home without her ribbon but with a joy too big for one pocket. When the lanterns blinked awake, she poured the chimes over every doorstep, and next time you find her name among leaves, see if you can spot where the first tiny ping began.
