🎨 How to color it

Give the mother’s dress a soft lavender, the girl’s leafy dress a fresh mint green, the boy’s striped shirt a sunny yellow, and the roses a warm coral pink. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny leaves, hair strands, flower centers, and the many thin stems crossing the bouquets. Try making the background vines pale sage so the coral roses and the children’s bright flowers feel like a shared surprise.

Behind the old glasshouse, Elodie pinched one blue ribbon in her pocket and searched for the single flower that would make Mama gasp. The air smelled wet and green, and every leaf tapped the panes with a tiny tick, tick, tick. Her little brother, Theo, trailed after her with three crooked daisies. “Just one perfect one,” Elodie whispered, stepping past the warm fern beds where visitors were not supposed to linger.

A fallen rose petal slid under a wooden bench. Elodie reached for it and found, tucked in the shadow, a flat paper packet tied with thread. Inside were pressed petals, seed specks, and a note in Mama’s handwriting: For the day my children find this—plant joy where everyone can see it. Elodie’s ribbon tore as she tied the packet shut again, but she did not mind the small fray.

They hurried back with more than one flower: armfuls, handfuls, a secret crackling between them like dry seeds. When Mama opened the packet, her smile grew too big for the glasshouse, so they gave blossoms to every cousin, aunt, and neighbor waiting outside. Next time you spot the biggest bouquet, see if you can guess where Elodie hid the blue ribbon, still smelling wet and green.
