🎨 How to color it

Try deep emerald for the main trunk sections, rose pink and berry red for the heart-shaped leaves, warm gold in the paisley curls, and soft teal along the exposed roots. Use sharp colored pencils and color from the outer leaf clusters inward, so your hand doesn’t smudge the tiny spirals, petals, and scalloped bands packed around the branches. For a playful twist, hide one unexpected purple heart among the red ones, as if the tree is keeping a family secret.

Every evening, Celia copied names from the town archive into tidy branches, pretending the ink smell was important and not just old glue. Then she invented Root Rummy: pick a heart, trace its stem, and guess which relative had caused the most trouble. The first round was harmless; the second made Aunt Luan’s name sprout a tiny crown of thorns. Because of that, Celia added rules, and because of THAT, the roots curled into footnotes nobody had filed—one for a runaway organist, one for a pie thief, one for twins who traded birthdays until no clerk could prove otherwise. Finally, laughing too loudly for a room of records, Celia wrote herself into the lowest root as Official Keeper of Suspicious Branches. The ink smelled of old glue, and perhaps, just perhaps, mischief.
