🎨 How to color it

Try sky blue for the puffy clouds’ shadows, sunny yellow for the big round sun, warm red for the house roof, and bright colors for the striped shirt and polka-dot dress. Use chunky crayons or washable markers for the large faces, path, and house walls, and don’t worry if little hands color past the lines. For a playful touch, make every dot on the dress a different color and alternate two colors on the dad’s shirt stripes.

Before breakfast, Tessa dragged chalk, ribbon, and two wobbly sticks onto the front path. She wanted to make a welcome parade for her family with her own two hands. Scratch, tap, swish went the chalk as she drew a curvy road from the porch to the apple tree.

Her dad made paper flags, her mom tied bows, and her little brother Jory stamped leaf prints that smelled green and muddy. “Mine has a smoosh!” he said, proudly.

Then the path giggled. Not a person—the path. Tessa lifted the doormat, and there sat a tiny paper crown folded by Jory, hiding like a king of dust bunnies.

So they crowned the welcome parade, held hands, and marched past the sunny bushes. Can you spot the curvy path where Tessa’s chalk went scratch, tap, swish?
